Principal’s Message

April was a busy month, which included many cultural celebrations and lots of learning in the classrooms.

We, at the school, are busy working on our planning for next year (2025/26).  Please help us by letting us know if you are planning on moving schools or changing programs so we can plan accordingly for our staffing and class configurations.

As you are planning your travel adventures for the summer, we want to remind you that school begins on September 2 with our Ice cream Social occurring on Wednesday August 27.  Please ensure that you return from all holidays prior to the start of school as it is a crucial time for both you and your children to become familiar with expectations and be ready to start the year successfully. In the extreme circumstance that you will not be at school for the first day of classes, you will need to discuss this absence with Mrs. Taylor.  Students who have not attended school by September 4, and have not discussed the absence with Mrs. Taylor, will be removed from our school roster and your child’s spot will be given to someone on the waitlist. Please do everything possible to ensure you plan for the first day of classes – September 2. We appreciate your help with this process and look forward to another successful year at Le Roi Daniels.

May is a very busy month with many, many field trips in all grades happening.  Please be sure to watch your calendar, regularly check your child’s Google Classroom, and watch for permission forms that are coming home!  If you are interested in volunteering for any of these events, please make sure you have completed your CBE Police Clearance ASAP, you can call the office to confirm if you do or do not already have clearance.

We will be hosting our annual School Council AGM on May 13 and we are looking for some new parents to step into some of these key roles as our current executive are moving on to Fairview.  Please see the School Council information at the end of the newsletter for details. Remember – one of the perks of being on council is preferential seating at our annual school concert!

As always, we as an administrative team, we strive to be responsive to the needs and concerns of all students and parents and encourage you to contact the school if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Andrea Taylor

Principal

Character Education

In the month of May, we are focusing on the important character trait of FAIRNESS. Teaching children about fairness helps them understand the value of treating others with respect and kindness; ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. At school, fairness can be seen when children take turns sharing classroom materials, play games where everyone follows the same rules, or work together to solve problems in group activities. At home, fairness might look like taking turns choosing family activities or helping out with chores in equal measure. In extra-curricular activities, fairness could involve ensuring all teammates have a chance to play, or that everyone’s ideas are listened to during a group project. When children understand fairness, they learn to be empathetic, solve conflicts peacefully, and contribute to a positive environment—skills that are valuable in every aspect of life. By reinforcing fairness both at school and at home, we help our students grow into thoughtful, considerate individuals who will make a difference in their communities.

Truth and Reconciliation Commitment

As we step into the month of May, we also transition into the final domain of the
Indigenous Education Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework: Mind-To Know. This domain, often referred to as the intellectual domain, invites all learners to engage deeply with knowledge, understanding, and critical thinking as part of a balanced and holistic lifelong learning journey.

The Mind-To Know domain emphasizes that learning is not just about accumulating facts—it is about nurturing the intellect in ways that are meaningful, purposeful, and connected to all aspects of our being. According to the Calgary Board of Education (Indigenous Education Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework, p. 15), this domain supports students in valuing their capacity to influence their own learning and personal growth, while contributing positively to the world around them.

Key attributes within this domain offer accessible and powerful entry points for schools, educators, and students. These include:

·        Holistic & Lifelong Learning – recognizing learning as an ongoing, interconnected process;

·        Mastery – the pursuit of deep understanding and skills;

·        Confidence – belief in one's ability to learn and grow;

·        Purpose – connecting learning to meaning and direction;

·        Accountability & Leadership – taking responsibility and inspiring others.

By intentionally weaving these attributes into our daily practices—through classroom discussions, collaborative projects, reflective activities, and leadership opportunities—we create space for students and staff to engage their minds. In doing so, we also activate the heart, spirit, and body, supporting the development of well-rounded, resilient, and thoughtful individuals.
